Two Are Better Than One
OPENING PRAYER:
Spirit, speak to us today.
David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him. 1 Samuel 22:1-2
REFLECT:
This story of David retreating to the Cave of Adullam is one of my favorites. In my darkest days, my therapist and I talked extensively about this small portion of Scripture.
David was running. He was at the end of his rope. He felt alone, betrayed, and like he had a target on his back. He was literally trying to keep himself safe from a madman.
So, he hid. In a deep, dark cave where he thought no one could find him.
Then four hundred men (and additional women and children most likely) did find him.
David was met with those who were willing to go to the depths with him. When he felt he was at his lowest, and most likely felt very alone, he was reminded that he was never alone, and that God still had good plans for him. He was reminded that he could still lead, still fulfill his purpose – even in the heart of his hideout.
APPLY:
We must take time to remember that we are not alone…and that doing life together is not always about wisdom, but is about empathy, grace, and love.
God sends those who will sit with us in our darkest hours and walk out of the pit with us…those who will pour into us and raise us out of the depths. He declares that he has good plans for us and provides us with a path forward – together – with grace, love, and fellowship.
May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. – 2 Corinthians 13:14
CLOSING PRAYER:
Spirit, remind us that we are not forced to retreat and that we are not alone. Show us yourself today as we embark on mission – remind us of grace and love as we go forth.
