Unreligious: Week 2 - Day 3

OPENING PRAYER:

Lord, help me develop more zeal to be a light for you.

READ: Matthew 5:14-15 (NIV)

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

REFLECT:

Some oil lamps in Jesus’ day were always lit and could be used to light other lamps. Helpers were needed to ensure that light was always available to the home.  One summer evening when we were in college my brother and I were headed home and the lights on my car started going dim and finally went out.  I didn’t know what to do because I didn’t have any tools with me but then my brother and I realized we were only a couple of miles from our uncle’s place.  We started walking down this dark, gravel country road and coming up over a hill we could see a light in their window.  What a relief.  My uncle was willing to go with us to see what the problem was, and we found out it was a lose fan belt which could be easily tightened.  Because of my uncle’s help we had enough light to go on home. In our lives we need to provide others with the beacon of light they need to find their way home to Jesus.  “No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.” (NLT)

APPLY:

This week think about what kind of light you are for others who need Jesus.

CLOSING PRAYER:

God, help me provide the light to others so they can find their way home to Jesus. Amen.
