Following Jesus Means Our Lives About His Kingdom, Not Just Our Vocation
OPENING PRAYER:
Jesus, I pray this morning my heart would be open for you to reveal to me where I lack trust in you. Amen.
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:18-20
REFLECT:
When I was saved and began following Jesus I learned that I had to be willing to leave things behind in my life in order to fully follow Jesus. One of those things was my desire to make flying airplanes a career path. Although I loved flying I knew that’s not what Jesus wanted me to invest my life in the most.
This is what he told Peter in the scripture above. Peter and Andrew had a net. A literal net, it was their fishing career. These were two real brothers who were doing the only thing they knew to do, fish for a living. Jesus called them away from what made them feel safe and secure. He wanted them to leave their net.
APPLY:
What net do you need to give Jesus control of? For Peter and Andrew, it was their job. What is your net? It’s hard to think about Jesus having control of your career, but if you invited Jesus into that area of your life?
Jesus may not be telling you to quit your job today and following him doesn’t mean you will have to choose a different career path. But what Jesus is saying is that he wants to come to work with you. He is saying he wants to be involved. He’s saying he wants you to love him way more than you love your work. Jesus wants us to surrender every part of our lives to him. When Jesus is invited into an area of our lives he always makes it better, even if we don’t quite see it yet. Whatever your net may be today, spend some time in prayer and lay your net at the feet of Jesus.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Dear Jesus, I lay my net at your feet this morning. I fully surrender everything about me to you. Make me into who you want me to be Jesus. Amen.
