Maundy Thursday

OPENING PRAYER:

Jesus, thank you for inviting us to the table.

READ: Matthew 26:26-28 NIV

'While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’ Matthew 26:26-28 NIV

REFLECT:

Today is for remembrance.

While eating the Passover Feast with his disciples, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, saying “This is My body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.”

Then, he took the cup and said that it resembled his blood that would be spilled for them. He told them to take these elements (bread & wine) and, when they did, they were to do it in remembrance of him and the sacrifice that he made for them.

APPLY:

With everything going on in the world around us, it’s easy to let our minds get overwhelmed with information and even worry. It’s important to slow down and remember Jesus – that he sacrificed himself for us and that he takes care of us and gives us all that we need, including his peace.

This week, we celebrate the fact that Jesus overcame death and was resurrected. The tomb was empty because Jesus defeated the enemy for us. No matter what big and scary things stand in our way, Jesus has already won the victory for us! We can go into today and every day with confidence and faith in him.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, thank you for leaving us equipped with the tools at hand to remember you well and to reflect on your beautiful sacrifice on our behalf.
