Holy Wednesday

OPENING PRAYER:

Spirit, thank you for your counsel and comfort.

READ: Psalms 27:13-14 NIV

'I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord ; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord .' Psalms 27:13-14 NIV

REFLECT:

acknowledge and celebrate the fact that Jesus died for our sins, it’s important to do so thoughtfully and with new eyes.

One day that often doesn’t really make it onto our radar is Holy Saturday. This day doesn’t get talked about a lot in the Bible or in our liturgy. We talk about Jesus’s death, burial, and resurrection, but in between there, there is another day ---- and I often wonder what that day was like for Jesus’s friends and followers.

They had just seen their leader arrested and killed. They didn’t even have time to bury him properly and now it was the Sabbath – a day that they were expected to rest. How heartbroken they must have been…how dumbstruck by grief and disbelief, questioning everything they thought they knew about this man they loved.

APPLY:

We often find ourselves in the “in between.” We experience times of unknown and grow impatient as we try to cling to the things we know and trust.

That’s exactly how I think the disciples felt. This week, they were cruising along, enjoying being in Jesus’s presence, preparing for Passover and then eating a feast with him. Then, all of the sudden, their world fell apart and he was gone. The benefit that we have is knowing what happened on the other side of the Sabbath…that what Jesus had promised came true. We know Sunday is coming.

What are your moments of unknown right now? Where are you struggling to trust and believe? What promises has God extended to you that can be a buoy as you wait to see them come to fruition?

CLOSING PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, soothe my weary soul today and remind me of God’s goodness. Point my heart in the direction of Sunday and urge me closer to the promises that I can claim over my life.
