Choosing the Better Part
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, as we seek you today, help us to choose what is better, just as Mary did in Luke chapter 10. May we learn to prioritize our time with You above all else. Amen.
"As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, 'Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!' 'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'"
This passage describes a visit Jesus made to the home of Martha and Mary, highlighting the contrast between Martha's busyness and Mary's choice to sit at Jesus' feet.
Luke 10:38-42 (NIV)
REFLECT:
The story of Mary and Martha is a powerful illustration of the choices we face in our daily lives. Martha was busy with preparations, distracted by the many tasks she felt were necessary. In contrast, Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet, prioritizing her relationship with Him over the demands of the moment. Jesus commended Mary for choosing what was better, emphasizing the importance of focusing on what truly matters.
In our own lives, we often find ourselves caught up in the busyness of daily tasks and responsibilities. We may feel overwhelmed by the demands placed upon us, much like Martha. However, Jesus invites us to choose the better part, to prioritize our time with Him above all else. This choice requires intentionality and a willingness to let go of distractions.
Pastor Elliott's message reminded us that godly patience is not about doing nothing but about choosing the right activity. By sitting at Jesus' feet, we align our hearts with His will and gain the strength and wisdom needed to navigate life's challenges. Let us be encouraged to make time for Jesus, knowing that this choice will not be taken away from us.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will take action by patiently sitting at the feet of Jesus.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for inviting us to sit with You and learn from You. Help us to choose what is better and to prioritize our relationship with You above all else. Amen.
