Look to the Light

OPENING PRAYER:

Jesus, show us your light.

READ: John 1:4-5, Philippians 2:15-16 (NIV)

“Life was in him and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.” John 1:4-5

“So that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the Word of Life.” Philippians 2:15-16

REFLECT:

Christmas lights are a common sight during this season. While your family admires these amazing and fun displays in coming days, let yourself think about how their light is most beautiful in the dark of night.

Think about the stars in the night sky and how beautifully they shine against their backdrop. Even though they are lightyears away, we can see their powerful light breaking through.

APPLY:

Just like the Christmas light displays or the stars in the night sky, Jesus’ light shines brightest against the darkness of the world.

Think about how hard it can be sometimes to even look directly at a bright light when your eyes are adjusted to the dark.

It’s amazing how light can pierce and shatter the darkness.

Focus on how Jesus shatters the darkness in your life and in your heart. If you can, get outside of the city lights with your family and gaze at the wondrous starlight. Reflect on how that represents so much of who we are in Jesus.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Jesus, help us look to you as our example of how to stand out against the backdrop of the world. Help our lights shine today.
