Baptism Story: Maddy Mercado

Taking the Plunge

Maddy Mercado is a second grader at Vermillion Elementary School and this summer she was led to baptism at Day Camp.

Maddy was attending Summer League Daycare (available at the Westlink Campus) and during the last week of June, the kids from Summer League had the opportunity to attend Day Camp at Eberly Farm.

When asked to sum up her camp experience in one sentence, Maddy says she learned more about God at Day Camp. "It was fun," she exclaimed. "I trust God more than I ever have before!"

As a Summer League participant, she was grouped with other second graders and her Summer League leader, Mr. Christian. Maddy also collected money for the Big Summer Give to help provide water to those in need. She saved money to give, looked for extra money around the house, and also set up a lemonade stand to show her generosity to God. She is continuing to be generous with her resources as she saves money to give.

At Day Camp, the kids learn about baptism and what it means personally for them. If they make a decision to be baptized, their parents are informed and encouraged through this big step. Maddy was one of many who made the decision to be baptized at Day Camp.

The weekend of July 28 & 29, Maddy took the plunge and followed Christ in baptism at the church-wide baptism celebration. She was so happy that her family was able to be there to experience and celebrate her baptism. Her whole family—both pairs of grandparents and even a cousin—was there to share in her public commitment.

When asked what she would tell someone about Day Camp, she exclaimed: "Camp is fun and you learn about God. You get to worship God, eat lunch and have fun." And of course, you get to swim too!

For Maddy, Day Camp wasn't just for fun, but also where she discovered her best next step to grow closer in her relationship with God. Her decision to get baptized at camp helped her realize: "God is always with me."
