Love Your Enemies

BIG IDEA:
Loving your enemies is the way of Jesus.
TEACHING POINTS:
  • Jesus calls us to love the hurtful person.
  • Jesus calls us to love the antagonistic person.
  • Jesus calls us to love the authoritarian person.
SCRIPTURE: Matthew 5:38-48 NIV
OPENING QUESTIONS:
  1. Who did you encounter last week that struggles with Jesus being the only way?
  2. What is one thing that you are thankful for from last week?
  3. What is something that was stressful or difficult this week and how can we help?

IN THE WORD:
  1. Read Matthew 5:38-42 in two translations and then have someone retell the message. Do the same with Matthew 5:43-48. How are the two passages different; how are they the same?
  2. What does this tell us about God? What does this tell us about people?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
  1. In your own life, who do you need to love and in which category (hurtful, antagonistic, or authoritarian) does this person fit? What specific way will you love (seek, serve or share) this person in the coming week?
  2. How can we pray for you and for each other as we do this in the coming week?
