Message Series Name: Overwhelmed

Message Title: Escapism/Addiction

Short Summary: When life feels overwhelming, we all have ways we try to escape: scrolling, shopping, isolating, or other coping mechanisms. But what if our attempts to deal with stress are actually keeping us trapped? This message explores how sin doesn't just want a moment of our attention; it wants to reign over our lives. Through Romans 6:12-14, we discover that Jesus offers us a new identity: we're no longer dead in sin but alive in Christ. We don't fight for freedom; we fight from the freedom Jesus has already given us. It's time to rewire our habits, bring our struggles into the light, and remember who God says we are.

Icebreaker Question

What's your go-to "escape" when you've had a long, stressful day? (Could be a snack, a show, a hobby, scrolling through your phone, or something completely unexpected!)

This question connects to the message's opening about how we all have different ways we try to cope and decompress, creating a safe space to acknowledge our tendencies without judgment.

Review of the Previous Week's "I Will" Statement

Last Week's "I Will" Statement: I will take a quiet step for my mental health this week.

Reflection Questions:

  • What "quiet step" did you commit to taking last week? How did it go?
  • Did you notice any difference, even a small one, in your mental or spiritual health? What made it easy or difficult to follow through?
  • For those who shared your step with someone in the group: How did having that accountability help (or what kept you from reaching out)?

Discussion Questions

Question 1: Understanding Our New Identity

Read Romans 6:12-14 together. Paul says we "were dead, but now have new life" and that "sin is no longer your master." What does it mean practically that sin doesn't have to reign in your life anymore? How does understanding your new identity in Christ change the way you approach your struggles with stress or unhealthy coping?

Context: The message emphasized that God has updated our address; we don't live under sin's control anymore, but many of us haven't updated our internal GPS. We keep going back to old patterns and old ways of thinking about ourselves.

Application Guidance: Share honestly about an area where you still live like sin is your master rather than living in the freedom Christ offers. What would change if you truly believed you have new life and a new identity?

Question 2: Recognizing When Coping Becomes Control

In his message, Christian mentioned that "sin wants to win" and that it never comes to us announcing it wants to take over our lives; it shows up as something small, subtle, or even harmless. What's one thing in your life that started as "just one" (one scroll, one drink, one purchase, one escape) but has grown into something you feel like you need? When did you first realize it had more control than you thought?

Context: The message highlighted how sin desires to reign, to occupy the throne of our hearts. Even things that aren't outright evil can become controlling when we use them to avoid what we're really feeling.

Application Guidance: Be vulnerable about where you see this pattern in your own life. How has this "small thing" impacted your relationship with God, with others, or with yourself? What emotions are you trying to avoid when you reach for this coping mechanism?

Question 3: Rewiring Our Brains and Habits

The message explained that our brains create pathways every time we give in to temptation, making it easier to repeat that behavior. Paul says, "instead" we should give ourselves completely to God. What's one practical "instead" you need to create this week? A new pathway that redirects you toward God when you feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed?

Context: Fighting from freedom means we have to rewire our habits. When we think this, we've trained ourselves to do that. But we can make new pathways that say, "When I feel this way, I'm going to choose this instead."

Application Guidance: Think about a specific trigger: a thought, feeling, or situation. What's the old pathway you've created? What new response could you practice this week? (Examples: When I feel like a failure, instead of isolating, I'll text a friend. When I'm anxious, instead of scrolling, I'll take a prayer walk.)

Question 4: Bringing Darkness into Light

Christian said, "The longer it lives in the dark, the more it just grows," and encouraged us to tell someone we trust about what we're struggling with. What makes it so hard to bring our struggles, bad habits, or addictions into the light? What fear or lie keeps you fighting alone?

Context: God never intended us to fight alone. We fight alongside others in community, and when we bring our struggles to light, we take away their power and invite others to help us.

Application Guidance: If you feel safe, share one struggle you've been keeping in the dark. If you're not ready to share the specific struggle, talk about what holds you back from being honest: fear of judgment, shame, pride, or something else. How can this group create a safer space for vulnerability?

Question 5: Embracing Grace When We Mess Up

The message reminded us that when we fail and go back to old patterns, "that's not who we are." We're not failures; we just made a mistake. How do you typically respond when you mess up? Do you move toward God or away from Him? How can embracing God's grace help you keep fighting instead of giving up?

Context: Paul says we live under freedom and grace, not under law. When we inevitably stumble, shame wants to keep us moving away from God. But grace invites us to turn back around and keep walking in our new identity.

Application Guidance: Reflect on a recent time you failed or gave in to an old habit. Did you let shame take you further down that road, or did you turn back to God? How can you practice self-compassion and God's grace this week when you face setbacks?

This Week's "I Will" Statement

I will fight a bad habit and ask someone to fight with me.

Group Challenge: Before you leave today, identify one specific bad habit or coping mechanism you're going to fight this week. Share it with at least one person in this group and ask them to check in with you about it during the week. Exchange phone numbers if needed and commit to praying for each other.

Prayer Prompts

Prompt 1: Open Prayer Requests
Leader asks: "What can we pray for you this week—anything you're facing, celebrating, or needing God's help with?"

Prompt 2: Fighting from Freedom
Pray for each person to have the courage to identify the area where they need to fight this week. Ask God to help them remember their new identity in Christ and to give them strength to create new pathways and habits that honor Him.

Prompt 3: Community and Vulnerability
Pray for boldness to bring struggles into the light and to ask someone to fight alongside them. Ask God to make this small group a safe place where people can be honest about their battles and receive grace, support, and accountability.
