Series Name: Overwhelmed
Message Title: Overwhelmed with Stress and Busyness
Short Summary: In a powerful, silent message, Pastor Carter invites us to examine the exhausting pace of our lives and discover that Jesus doesn't offer us another system or strategy; He offers us Himself. True rest isn't found in better time management but in coming to Jesus, taking His yoke, and learning to be still enough to hear His voice. The answer to our busyness isn't to try harder; it's to stop striving and start following.
Icebreaker Question
If your life had a speed setting like a treadmill, what speed are you running at right now? (Walking pace? Jogging? Full sprint? Or maybe you've fallen off the back!)
Share what "speed" best describes your current pace of life and why.
Review: Previous Week's "I Will" Statement
Last week, Pastor Rodney Elliott challenged us with: "I will build my weekly rhythm of certainty."
Reflection Questions:
- What specific rhythms or practices did you build into your week to combat anxiety and create certainty?
- How did establishing these rhythms help you experience God's presence and peace, or what made it difficult to follow through?
- As we transition from talking about anxiety to talking about stress and busyness, how might those two things be connected in your life right now?
Discussion Questions
Question 1: Recognizing Our Exhaustion
The message opened with a simple but piercing question: "Have you been busy or stressed?" Think about the list that followed: skipping vacations, constantly checking your phone, working through lunch, and missing important moments. Which of these patterns do you most recognize in your own life right now?
Context: Pastor Carter didn't start with solutions; he started by naming what many of us are living but rarely acknowledge. Before we can receive rest, we have to be honest about our exhaustion.
Life Application: As you share, be specific. Don't just say "I'm busy", describe what that busyness actually looks like in your daily routine. What are you sacrificing? What's the cost of maintaining your current pace?
Question 2: The Person, Not the System
Jesus said, "Come to ME all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). The message emphasized that Jesus isn't offering a better system or routine; He's offering Himself. What does it reveal about our hearts when we instinctively look for a "system" to fix our stress rather than turning to a person... to Jesus?
Context: We live in a culture obsessed with productivity hacks, life optimization, and better routines. But Jesus says rest is found in relationship with Him, not in perfecting our schedules.
Life Application: Reflect honestly: When you feel overwhelmed, what do you typically reach for first? A new planner? A productivity app? More caffeine? How might your response change if you believed Jesus Himself was your answer?
Question 3: Taking the Yoke
The message explained that taking Jesus' yoke means two things: (1) you're not carrying the burden alone, He carries it WITH you, and (2) you let Him lead, you live by His agenda, not yours. Which of these two truths is harder for you to embrace right now, and why?
Context: A yoke connects two animals so they can share the work, but it also means one leads and the other follows. Jesus invites us into partnership, but He's the one who sets the direction.
Life Application: Share a specific burden you're carrying right now. What would it look like to truly share that burden with Jesus this week? And what would need to change if you let Jesus set the agenda instead of you trying to control everything?
Question 4: The Discipline of Stillness
The message noted, "If you aren't still and if you don't listen, how is Jesus going to give you rest?" and reminded us that "Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed" (Luke 5:16). When was the last time you were truly in a solitary, silent place, not just physically alone, but mentally and spiritually present with God?
Context: The entire message was delivered in silence, a disorienting experience that forces us to slow down. Jesus regularly practiced silence and solitude, yet these are the very things we most resist.
Life Application: Be vulnerable: Why is it so hard for you personally to be still and silent before God? What are you afraid you might hear? Or not hear, if you stopped and listened? What specific time and place could you carve out this week for silence and solitude?
Question 5: Trust and Rest
The message asked a convicting question: "Do you trust God enough to rest? Or are you trusting in success? Work? Money? Yourself?" Augustine wrote, "Our souls are restless until we find rest in Thee." What are you actually trusting in to provide security, significance, or stability right now?
Context: Our inability to rest often reveals what we're really trusting. If we can't stop working, we might be trusting our work more than God's provision. If we can't unplug, we might be trusting our control more than God's sovereignty.
Life Application: This requires deep honesty. Name what you're functionally trusting in (even if you wouldn't theologically claim it). How is that false source of rest failing you? What would it look like to transfer that trust to God this week?
This Week's "I Will" Statement
I will be still before Jesus and rest in Him.
Challenge: This week, schedule at least 15-30 minutes of uninterrupted silence and solitude with God. No agenda, no prayer list, no Bible study plan, just being still in His presence. Turn off your phone, find a quiet place, and practice listening rather than talking. See what Jesus wants to give you in that space.
Prayer Prompts
Prompt 1: General Prayer Requests Leader asks: "What specific prayer needs do you have this week that you'd like the group to pray for?"
Prompt 2: Praying for Rest and Release "Let's pray for anyone who is carrying burdens alone, burdens Jesus wants to share. Pray that we would experience the reality of His yoke being easy and His burden being light. Ask God to help us release what we were never meant to carry by ourselves."
Prompt 3: Praying for Stillness and Surrender "Pray for courage to be still and silent before God this week. Ask the Holy Spirit to quiet the noise in our minds and hearts so we can hear Jesus' voice clearly. Pray that we would trust God enough to stop striving and start following His lead."

Small Group Leader Tip: The silence of this message was intentional and profound. Consider beginning or ending your group time with 2-3 minutes of complete silence, inviting everyone to practice what the message called them to. Let the discomfort settle, and trust that God can speak in the quiet.
