BIG IDEA:
As Christ-followers, we can learn to manage our depression.
TEACHING POINTS:

• Take care of your physical needs.

• Get a fresh awareness of God and his purpose for your life.

SCRIPTURE: 1 Kings 19:1-15 NIV
OPENING QUESTIONS:

1. Who is someone you walked alongside this week in some way? What happened?

2. What is something that you are thankful for this week?

3. What was something challenging or stressful this week and how can we help you?

IN THE WORD:

1. Describe the big event in Elijah’s life that proceeded his season of depression. Retell the story from 1 Kings 18 NIV. How could depression follow such an awesome God-moment?

2. Illustrate how Elijah focused too much on his feelings, comparing himself to others and negative self-talk. 1 Kings 19:3-4 NIV, 1 Kings 19:10 NIV, 1 Kings 19:14 NIV

3. What were some of Elijah’s physical needs and how did he take care of them? 1 Kings 19:5-9 NIV

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1. What is your experience with depression? On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being on-going clinical depression and 1 being occasional moments of depression, what number would you give yourself and why?

2. Which one of the areas of refocus (too focused on feelings, negative self-talk, comparing yourself with others) can you best relate to? Share an example with your group.

3. What is something from this study you can obey?

4. Who is someone you know that deals regularly with depression? How could you walk alongside them this week?
