Series Name: Guardrails

Message Title: Guardrails For Money

Short Summary: God doesn't want our leftovers; He wants to be first in every area of our lives, including our finances. This message explores the wisdom of Proverbs to help us understand that money is a tool God has given us, not to hoard or chase, but to honor Him first, live within our means, build slowly with faithfulness, and be radically generous. When we put the "big rocks" in first and follow God's design for our wealth, we experience freedom and become a blessing to others.

Icebreaker Question

If you could only eat one food for a month, steak or salad, which would you choose, and what would you miss most about the other option?

Review of the Previous Week's "I Will" Statement

Last week's commitment was: "I will speak life-giving words to someone I've hurt."

Did anyone follow through on speaking life-giving words to someone you've hurt or needed to reconcile with? What happened when you took that step? For those who didn't get the chance yet, what's holding you back, and how can we support you this week?

Discussion Questions

Question 1: Reflecting on God's Design for Money

Read Proverbs 3:9-10 together. The message emphasized that God wants to come first in our finances, not as an afterthought, but as an intentional act of worship and trust. When you look honestly at your bank account or spending habits, what do they reveal about what you truly prioritize? How does that align (or not align) with what you say you value?

Context: Solomon wrote these proverbs to pass wisdom to the next generation, teaching that honoring God first with our wealth isn't a formula for getting rich - it's about putting our trust in Him above all else.

Application Guidance: This question invites vulnerability about the gap between stated values and actual behavior. Encourage participants to share without shame, recognizing that awareness is the first step toward change.

Question 2: Living Below Our Means

The message used the image of "steak with someone you hate" versus "a bowl of vegetables with someone you love" (Proverbs 15:16-17) to illustrate that just because we can afford something doesn't mean we can afford the lifestyle. Describe a time when you reached for something you wanted but later realized it cost you more than money; maybe peace, relationships, or margin in your life. What did that experience teach you?

Context: Our culture constantly tells us to indulge and reach for what makes us happy, often through debt and loans. But God's wisdom calls us to count the cost and live humbly, creating space for Him to work.

Application Guidance: This is an opportunity to share stories of regret, lessons learned, or ongoing struggles with contentment. Affirm that living below our means isn't restrictive; it's protective, like guardrails on a mountain road.

Question 3: Building Slowly vs. Getting Rich Quick

Proverbs 13:11 warns against "get rich quick schemes" and celebrates wealth that grows through faithful, steady work. In what areas of your life (financial or otherwise) are you tempted to look for shortcuts or instant success rather than building slowly and faithfully? What would it look like to embrace the "bamboo plant" approach, investing in deep roots even when you don't see immediate growth?

Context: The message highlighted how social media, day trading, and sports betting lure people (especially younger generations) into chasing fast wealth, often creating destructive habits. God's way is different: faithful, daily obedience that builds a strong foundation.

Application Guidance: Invite participants to identify one area where they're chasing quick results and consider what small, faithful step they could take this week to build roots instead.

Question 4: Generosity Over Greed

Read Proverbs 11:24-25 together. The passage says, "Give freely and become more wealthy. Be stingy and lose everything." The message clarified this isn't a formula; it's about God blessing us so we can bless others. When have you experienced the joy and freedom that comes from being generous? Conversely, when have you held tightly to your resources and felt the opposite—anxiety, scarcity, or control?

Context: God's kingdom mindset around money is that it should flow through us, not accumulate in us. Generosity breaks the control that wealth can have over our hearts.

Application Guidance: This question creates space for testimonies of generosity's impact and honest confession about the grip money can have. Encourage participants to share both the highs and the struggles.

Question 5: The Legacy We're Building

The message challenged us to think about what we're passing on to the next generation - not just an inheritance of money, but a legacy of faith. If your children, grandchildren, or the people closest to you were to describe what matters most to you based on how you spend your time and money, what would they say? Is that the legacy you want to leave?

Context: In his message, Christian shared his hope that his kids would understand why they ate off-brand cereal, because God gave their family a vision bigger than comfort. What we model teaches more than what we say.

Application Guidance: This is a deeply personal question that may surface emotion. Create space for reflection and encourage participants to name one specific change they could make to better align their daily choices with the legacy they want to leave.

This Week's "I Will" Statement

I will put in the big rocks first.

Challenge participants to identify what this means practically for them this week:

  • Putting God first in their giving
  • Cutting back on spending to create margin
  • Ending a subscription or selling something that's draining resources
  • Creating a budget or financial plan
  • Taking one step toward generosity

Prayer Prompts

Prompt 1: Leader, please ask for general prayer requests from the group.

Prompt 2: Pray for anyone who is feeling the weight of financial stress, debt, or the temptation to chase quick wealth. Ask God to give them wisdom, peace, and the courage to trust His design for their finances.

Prompt 3: Pray for hearts of generosity in the group, that God would break any grip that money has on us and help us experience the freedom and joy that comes from giving freely and being a blessing to others.
