Who Asked the Farmer?
OPENING PRAYER:
Father, silence the voices that say I'm not qualified, not ready, not enough. Remind me that You have never been limited by human credentials or the world's approval.
"But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him." 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NIV)
Paul wrote this letter to a church in Corinth obsessed with status, wisdom, and impressive speakers. In a culture that valued rhetoric and pedigree, Paul reminded them that God intentionally chooses the unlikely, not despite their weakness, but because of it, so that His power is made unmistakably clear.
REFLECT:
Pastor Rodney Elliott opened up about a moment early in his ministry that still stings. At twenty-five, he was asked to lead small groups at the church. After his first meeting, where he admittedly did his best but wasn't very polished, he overheard two respected church members talking. One asked, "Who asked the farmer to lead this thing?" The other replied, "Did they just find him out in a cornfield?" Rodney laughed telling the story, but you could hear the vulnerability beneath it. He said the joke's on them because that's exactly where they found him—in a cornfield. But in that moment, it hurt. It reinforced every doubt he'd already been whispering to himself.
The message emphasized something critical: Satan's lie is that our lives are unlikely to make that big of an impact. So we sit on the sidelines before we even start. We think we need a hundred thousand followers, or the perfect credentials, or someone important to vouch for us. But God's pattern, from the beginning, has been to choose the disqualified, the overlooked, the ones nobody else would pick. David was the eighth son, too young, too small, stuck with the sheep. Rodney reminded us that if God looked at what everyone else sees, we'd all be disqualified. But He doesn't. He looks at the heart. And when He finds a heart that's willing, He does something the world calls impossible.
APPLY:
Write down one area where you've held back because you felt unqualified or unworthy. Maybe it's serving in a ministry, starting a conversation about faith, pursuing a calling, or simply showing up. This week, take one small step forward in that area—not because you're suddenly qualified, but because God uses the unlikely. Send the email. Make the call. Volunteer. Stop waiting for permission.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will be faithful in private, trusting God for tomorrow's battles.
CLOSING PRAYER:
God, thank You that You've never needed me to be impressive—You've only needed me to be available. Forgive me for the times I've believed the lie that I'm not enough. Help me remember that when You choose someone, You also equip them. Give me the courage to step forward, even when I feel small.
PRAYER REQUEST:
