The Spirit Who Comes Powerfully

OPENING PRAYER:

Holy Spirit, fill me so completely that people can't help but see Jesus in my life. Don't let me settle for distant knowledge about You when You're offering intimate presence with me. Come powerfully and change everything.

READ: 1 Samuel 16:13 (NLT)

"So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah." 1 Samuel 16:13 (NLT)

In ancient Israel, anointing with oil was a ceremonial act that set someone apart for a specific purpose—priests, prophets, and kings were anointed. But the anointing meant nothing without what followed: the Spirit of the Lord coming powerfully. This wasn't a one-time emotional experience but a sustained, transforming presence that equipped David for everything ahead.

REFLECT:

Near the end of the message, Ryan addressed the feelings of inadequacy that might be swirling in our minds: "Do you feel unlikely? Do you have thoughts that you can't measure up or perform at a level required?" Then he reminded us of something we desperately need to hear: "I want to remind you, take captive those thoughts. Those aren't from God." And then the game-changer: "Y'all remember in our story where it said 'and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on'? If you've made Jesus the leader of your life, that same spirit lives in you."

Let that sink in. The same Spirit that empowered a shepherd boy to defeat a giant, to lead a nation, to write psalms that have comforted millions—that Spirit lives in you. Not a lesser version. Not a training-wheels edition for beginners. The actual Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, has taken up residence in your life if you belong to Jesus. And 2 Timothy 1:7 confirms it: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline."

This means the "I can't do this" thoughts, the "I'm not qualified" narratives, the "I'm too broken for God to use me" lies—none of those come from the Spirit who dwells in you. The Spirit brings power, love, and self-discipline. The Spirit brings confidence rooted not in your abilities but in His presence. The Spirit brings transformation that continues from the moment you say yes to Jesus.

Ryan's entire journey—from the chaos of his twenties to standing on a stage teaching God's Word—is a testimony to what happens when the Spirit comes powerfully upon an unlikely person with a surrendered heart. You don't need to be impressive, educated, polished, or perfect. You need to be available. You need to ask God daily to give you a heart after His own. And you need to trust that the Spirit in you is more than enough for whatever God calls you to.

APPLY:

Start each morning this week with this prayer: "Holy Spirit, search my heart. Show me what needs to change. Fill me powerfully so that people see Jesus in my life." Then pause and listen. Write down what He reveals—specific areas to confess, attitudes to shift, or steps to take. Share what you're learning with a trusted friend who can pray with you and encourage you.

I WILL STATEMENT:

I will ask God daily to give me a heart after His own.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Spirit of God, I don't want to just know about You—I want to experience Your powerful presence in my life. Fill me so completely that fear loses its grip, insecurity fades, and confidence in Your sufficiency rises. Make me a living testament to what You can do with an unlikely person who has a surrendered heart. Come powerfully upon me, not just once, but from this day on.

PRAYER REQUEST:

Share your prayer request and pray for others.
