The Shepherd Became the King
OPENING PRAYER:
Lord, help me trust that nothing in my story is wasted. Every season of preparation, every humble beginning, every overlooked moment—You are weaving it all together for purposes I cannot yet see.
"The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake." Psalm 23:1-3 (NIV)
Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved passages in Scripture, often read at funerals and in times of comfort. David wrote it, and while he may have penned the words later in life, the imagery and theology came directly from his years as a shepherd. Every metaphor—the green pastures, the still waters, the guidance—was learned not in a palace but in the pasture.
REFLECT:
Pastor Rodney Elliott made an observation that's easy to miss: David's faithfulness as a shepherd taught him how to be a king. He asked a brilliant question about Psalm 23: "Was that written in a palace or was it written in the pasture?" The answer is clear—it was written in the pasture. David might have penned it later, but those were the reflections and theology of a shepherd. The years that seemed insignificant, that felt like wasted time while his brothers were doing "important" things, were actually forming the heart and wisdom of Israel's greatest king.
This connects to one of the core themes of the entire message: God uses what the world overlooks. The world says you need credentials, platforms, and recognition before you can do anything meaningful. But God says, "Go be a shepherd. Be faithful in the pasture. Fight the lions and bears that nobody sees. Let me form your character in the hidden places." Rodney emphasized that David embraced those ordinary battles; shepherding wasn't beneath him even though he'd been anointed king. He didn't despise the small beginnings. He didn't waste those years wishing he was somewhere else. He was fully present in the faithfulness God required of him in that season.
And here's the beautiful truth: that faithfulness prepared him not just to kill Goliath, but to lead a nation. The pasture was his training ground for the palace. The sheep taught him how to care for people. The loneliness taught him to depend on God. The responsibility for vulnerable lives taught him what it meant to lay down your life for others. Nothing was wasted. Every season of hiddenness was purposeful preparation.
APPLY:
Think about the season you're in right now. Instead of wishing you were somewhere else or doing something "bigger," ask God what He's teaching you right here. What character is He forming? What skills are you developing? What is He revealing about Himself? Write down three things you're learning in this current season that might be preparing you for something you can't yet see.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will be faithful in private, trusting God for tomorrow's battles.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, forgive me for despising the seasons that feel small or hidden. Thank You that You never waste anything—every experience, every struggle, every moment of faithfulness is weaving together a story only You can see. Help me be fully present where You have me, trusting that You're preparing me for what's ahead.
