The Grit That Changed Everything
OPENING PRAYER:
Spirit of the Living God, meet me in the wreckage of my own making. Show me that my past failures don't disqualify me from Your future plans. Give me the grit to turn toward You even when turning back feels impossible.
"Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you." Psalm 51:10-12 (NLT)
This is David's prayer after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. It's a raw, broken plea from a man who had sinned catastrophically yet still believed God could remake him. Unlike Saul, who protected his image when confronted, David threw himself on God's mercy and begged for heart transformation.
REFLECT:
Ryan's vulnerability in sharing his own story gave the message its most powerful moment. He described his late twenties—financially comfortable by world standards with a new truck, a sports car, a four-wheeler, working nearly seven days a week for a company where he was well-paid. But underneath the material success, he was "miserable and completely devoid of joy." Then came the moment that stopped him in his tracks: asking his boss for a schedule change so he could travel, spend time with family, maybe find someone to settle down with. The boss's response was devastating: "Ryan, why do you want a girlfriend? I pay you enough, you can afford a hooker."
What happened next is what the message was really about. Ryan could have shrugged it off, justified the lifestyle, blamed the job, or numbed himself further. Instead, he felt God questioning him: "What are you doing? Where are you going?" Within two months, he quit that job without knowing what came next, turned to God and said, "I am sorry and I need help." That's when everything shifted.
Ryan described what God gave him in that moment: "An incredible grit, a tenacity to change my life and its direction like I had never had before." This wasn't self-improvement or pulling himself up by his bootstraps. This was God making in him a new heart—one that "longed to know God's will and become the best version of Ryan that I could possibly be." The transformation didn't erase the painful past, but God redeemed it, using those broken years to shape Ryan into someone who could "love on people who feel unlikely or unqualified" in a way only he could.
The stunning truth: a heart change starts a trajectory change. David experienced this when God's Spirit came powerfully upon him. Ryan experienced it in that moment of surrender. You can experience it whenever you stop making excuses and start crying out for help. God doesn't need you to clean yourself up first. He needs you to get honest about the mess and ask Him to create something new.

Is there an area of your life where you've been comfortable in compromise, making excuses for patterns you know aren't God's will for you? Write down one specific area where you need to quit making excuses and ask God for the grit to change direction. Then share it with one trusted person who will pray with you and hold you accountable.

CLOSING PRAYER:
Jesus, I'm done pretending I can manage my own transformation. I need the kind of grit that only comes from You—the strength to quit what's killing me, the courage to confess what I've hidden, and the faith to believe You can create in me a clean heart. Do what only You can do. Make me new.
