Seeking Wisdom
OPENING PRAYER:
Father, calm my mind today so that I can better discern your leading. Give me wisdom as I seek you more fully.
READ:
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
REFLECT:
Building a strong foundation for your family is one of the best things you can do. The Bible tells us that in this world we will have trouble. (John 16:33). The Bible does not say that we might have trouble or that if we are good that we can avoid trouble. No, the Bible directly states that we will have trouble. This trouble might come in the form of a health crisis, money problems or disappointment in relationships.
Without a firm foundation in Jesus, our house (our family) will fall. Knowing that the storm is coming can help us prepare so that when trouble strikes, we are ready. Jesus will anchor our lives, and our families, through these storms. This does not mean that the storms will be easy or that they will not hurt. There may even be some damage to our house, but in the end the house anchored in Christ will still be standing.
APPLY:
Shore up your foundation. What can you do to make your family more strongly rooted in Christ? It is not just about attending church on the weekend. Have honest conversations in your house about God. Discuss with your kids why we can be confident that God is real. Try out the “Parent Cue” app for your phone that will help you translate the lessons your kids learn on Sundays into everyday life during the week. Strengthen your family by knowing what you believe and why you can have trust in your faith. Try to find a devotion to do with either your spouse or your family. Strengthen your marriage by investing time in your relationship. Go on a date night and enjoy each other’s company. The work that you put into your family now will serve you well when trouble comes.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, show me ways that I can strengthen my family. I know there is great value in putting in the work to build up the foundation of my family. Give me opportunities to anchor our home in you.
