What It Means To Steward What We Have Well
OPENING PRAYER:
Dear Jesus, help me see how I can best steward what you’ve trusted me with. Amen.
“After a long time, the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
“His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’” Matthew 25:14-30 (NIV)
REFLECT:
God has ownership, we have stewardship. That means that God has entrusted us with what we’ve been given in life. We see a little about God’s character toward stewardship found in the verses above. The servant that stewarded the bags well was rewarded while the one that buried it wasn’t.
God wants us to be good stewards of what he’s given us. He wants us to develop the mentality of being trusted with money. He wants us to honor him in our finances by making wise decisions with what he’s given us. It’s our job to be good managers of what we have been given and, in the process, trust God for the outcome.
APPLY:
Maybe for you stewarding well simply means to start taking your financial decisions to God and invite him in that area. Maybe for you it’s to actually make a budget listing out your giving to the local church and all of your expenses so that you can begin stewarding well. Or maybe it’s simply to ask this question, ‘how can I begin to grow what God has given me?’
CLOSING PRAYER:
Heavenly father, help me learn to live by honoring you with my finances. Amen.
