Shine: Week 1 - Day 1

OPENING PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, thank you that you loved us so much you gave us Jesus. Amen

READ: Luke 5:27 (NIV)

“After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him,”

REFLECT:

Levi, better known as Matthew, was not the type of person you would think Jesus would choose to join his group of disciples. To the others in the group this was quite a shock! Matthew’s life obviously had some flaws. In Jesus’s day, tax collectors were hated by the Jews because of their reputation of cheating and their support of Rome. But this did not stop Jesus. He saw something much different.

APPLY:

How often do we respond like the Pharisees? We look with our human eyes and don’t see what God sees. So often we are short-sighted as we only see the physical side of a person and not what they can become when they are united with God. Matthew’s life is a great example of how Jesus took an ordinary tax collector and made him into one of his 12 disciples who eventually wrote the first book of the New Testament. Today as you go about your life, actively search out opportunities to shine the love of Jesus to others. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
