Does Your Bank Statement Tell the Truth?
OPENING PRAYER:
Holy Spirit, give me the courage to look honestly at my life and ask the hard questions. Help me align my actions with my beliefs, my spending with my values, and my resources with Your kingdom.
"Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain and your vats will overflow with good wine."
Proverbs 3:9-10 (NLT)
The command to honor God with wealth wasn't just about religious duty—it was about trust and priority. In an agricultural society where the first fruits represented the best and most valuable portion of the harvest, giving them to God before knowing if there would be enough left required profound faith.
REFLECT:
Pastor Christian Hallberg asked a question that should make all of us uncomfortable: "If I claim that God is first in my life, would my bank statement say the same?" That's not a rhetorical question meant to shame us - it's an honest diagnostic tool. Our bank statements don't lie. They tell the truth about what we actually value, not what we say we value. They reveal where our treasure is, and Jesus said our hearts follow our treasure.
The message challenged us to consider whether our giving reflects our values. Have we been giving God leftovers - whatever happens to be left after we've taken care of everything else? Or have we been intentional about putting the big rocks in first, making God a priority in our finances before we spend on anything else? This isn't about earning God's favor or trying to manipulate Him into blessing us. It's about worship. It's about trust. It's about saying with our actual resources, not just our words, "God, You are first. You are Lord. I trust Your design for my life more than my own plans." When we put God first with our finances, when we're intentional and thoughtful about how we use what He's given us, something shifts. The rest starts to flow differently. We find margin we didn't know we had. We experience freedom instead of anxiety. And we discover that God's design for this tool called money is so much better than anything we could have figured out on our own.
APPLY:
This is the week to get practical and honest. Print out or pull up your last three months of bank and credit card statements. Sit down with them - maybe with your spouse if you're married, or with a trusted friend who can help you see clearly. Add up what you've given to God and His kingdom. Add up what you've spent on entertainment, dining out, subscriptions, and non-essentials. Don't judge yourself harshly but do look honestly. Does the ratio reflect that God is first? If not, what's one concrete change you can make starting this week? Maybe it's setting up automatic giving, so God gets the first fruits before you spend on anything else. Maybe it's cutting one subscription and redirecting that money to kingdom purposes. Maybe it's simply praying before you spend, asking God if this purchase honors Him. Choose one action and commit to it.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will put in the big rocks first.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for loving me enough to challenge me. Forgive me for the times my spending has told a different story than my words. Give me the courage to make real changes, to put You first not just in theory but in practice. Help me trust that Your design for my resources is better than my own, and that when I honor You first, everything else falls into place. Teach me to live with open hands, holding loosely to what You've given me, and holding tightly to You alone.
