The Role of Doubt in Faith
OPENING PRAYER:
Gracious God, as we explore the role of doubt in our faith journey, open our hearts to understand how it can lead us closer to You. May Your Spirit guide us in truth and wisdom. Amen.
One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”
This passage recounts the story of Thomas, one of Jesus' disciples, who doubted the resurrection until he saw Jesus with his own eyes. Jesus' response to Thomas offers insight into how God views our doubts.
REFLECT:
Thomas, often labeled as "Doubting Thomas," provides a relatable example of how doubt can coexist with faith. Despite his initial skepticism, Thomas' encounter with the risen Christ transformed his doubt into a profound declaration of faith: "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). This story illustrates that doubt does not disqualify us from experiencing the fullness of God's presence and power.
The sermon emphasizes that true faith is not the absence of doubt, but the willingness to follow Jesus despite our uncertainties. Thomas' journey shows us that doubt can lead to a deeper understanding and a more personal relationship with Christ. Jesus did not condemn Thomas for his doubt; instead, He invited him to see and believe. This invitation is extended to all of us, encouraging us to bring our doubts to Jesus and allow Him to reveal His truth.
In our own lives, we may encounter situations that challenge our faith and cause us to question God's goodness or existence. These moments are opportunities to seek God more earnestly, to ask questions, and to grow in our understanding of His character. By embracing our doubts and bringing them to God, we open ourselves to the transformative power of His love and grace.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will share my doubts with God and with another person this week.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Father, thank You for meeting us in our doubts and leading us to a deeper faith. Help us to trust in Your promises and to seek Your truth with open hearts. May our doubts draw us closer to You and strengthen our relationship with You. Amen.
