Breaking Social Norms
OPENING PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, as we begin our devotional time with you, open our hearts and minds to Your Word. Help us to see beyond our comfort zones and embrace the lessons You have for us today. Amen.
"Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, 'Will you give me a drink?' (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, 'You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?' For Jews do not associate with Samaritans."
REFLECT:
In this passage, Jesus breaks significant social and cultural barriers by speaking to a Samaritan woman. Jews and Samaritans had deep-seated animosities, and men typically did not engage in public conversations with women, especially those of questionable repute. Jesus' decision to travel through Samaria and engage with this woman demonstrates His willingness to defy societal norms to reach those who are marginalized and ostracized.
Jesus' actions teach us the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones to connect with others, especially those who may feel like outsiders. His example challenges us to look beyond societal prejudices and see the inherent worth in every individual. This encounter at the well is a powerful reminder that God's love transcends all human-made barriers.
Reflecting on this, consider the people in your life who may feel like outsiders. How can you reach out to them in love and compassion? Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman was not just about quenching physical thirst but addressing a deeper spiritual need. Similarly, our interactions should aim to meet both the physical and spiritual needs of those around us.
I WILL STATEMENT:
I will move a conversation from superficial to spiritual with someone who doesn’t follow Jesus this week. This could be a colleague, neighbor, or even a family member. Make a conscious effort to reach out to them this week, showing them the love and acceptance that Jesus demonstrated.
CLOSING PRAYER:
Lord, give me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and reach out to those who feel like outsiders. Help me to see them through Your eyes and to share Your love with them. Thank You for the example of Jesus, who broke down barriers to reach the lost. Amen.
