11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Magi are wrapping up their journey and have finally reached Jesus who is with his mother, Mary. We do not know exactly who the Magi were besides foreign people who were probably wealthy. It is widely believed that they did not follow the Jewish faith of the day. The fact that they bowed down in worship of Jesus tells us a lot about God’s power. God uses this young boy who will eventually die for the sins of the world to bring powerful men to their knees. The gifts that the Magi presented to Jesus were highly valuable and extravagant gifts fit for a king. In this passage, we also see Herod’s plan fall apart. The Magi return home by a different route so that Herod cannot find out from them where Jesus is. God intervened and protected Jesus from Herod’s plot to harm Him. This story teaches us that nobody is beyond the reach of God’s changing love.
Spend some time discussing this month’s Heart 2 Heart focus: aiding refugees of the conflict in Syria. The story of the Magi in Matthew 2 illustrates that God will go to great lengths to reach and love His children. In our desire to be like Christ, this often means we too must go to great lengths to reach those in need. Make a stop at the Heart 2 Heart table in the atrium this weekend and learn about the refugee crisis. Hear what a $30 donation will give to a family in need and how this aid is being used to do the work of Jesus.
PRAY ABOUT IT!
